“What interested me about HSBC was the employee culture, the strong focus on customers and the opportunity to build on this strong foundation,” he says. “The bank’s global presence enables us to serve clients with all of their needs in a way that other banks cannot. HSBC is also the world’s largest commercial bank, so we can connect all of our clients to a world of opportunity and help them manage their finances both in Canada and abroad. “
Set the standard
At HSBC, Tomei strives to lead by example. His vision for the company, coupled with his ability to inspire and transform, sparked massive growth from the start and made the bank’s retail franchise a preferred destination for customers and employees. Tomei used his extensive banking experience to drive transformation growth by sharpening customer focus, introducing new products and services, optimizing sales channels and cultivating relationships – all under adverse macroeconomic conditions.
He has continued his passion for diversity and inclusion at HSBC and is currently the chair of the bank’s D&I committee.
“We operate in 64 countries and territories, so it’s important that we have this diversity of thoughts and people,” says Tomei. “Diversity is built into our culture. That has always impressed me personally. My background is Italian – my parents came to Canada over 50 years ago. I know firsthand the challenges newcomers face, which is why D&I has always been so important to me. ”
Tomei has achieved a number of impressive achievements over the course of his career. In 2010 he was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 by Caldwell Partners International. Last year he won Annual report‘Best Executive Award and a HERoes Women Role Model Award for his work promoting diversity and gender equality. Although Tomei says he is honored with these individual awards, he believes they really reflect the work of his team.
