Are you a British Gas customer? Do you pay your electricity bill via a prepaid meter? If you answered yes to both questions, you could be eligible for support of up to £250 from British Gas.

This is a voluntary credit payment of up to £250, meaning British Gas decides who gets the help. This is made available to those struggling with their energy bills. Likewise, not everyone with prepaid meters is eligible to receive the credit.

British Gas has announced that over the next month, eligible customers will see the credit added to their prepaid meter. You do not have to contact the company to apply. If you are eligible, you will be automatically identified and credited.

This is part of a new £10m support package from British Gas aimed at helping the most vulnerable customers with prepayment meters. Other support from the company includes vulnerability scans for customers who may need them.

British Gas also said it will not switch customers to prepaid meters during this cold season unless they specifically request it. However, those who are already using prepaid meters can request smart prepaid meters if they are struggling with rising costs.

Chris O’Shea, Chief Executive of Centrica, parent company of British Gas, said:

«We know that some prepaid customers are self-opting out and not reaching out to get help, so we’ve reviewed our policies to do more to target support to this group.

«As a responsible business we are doing all we can to support our customers through this crisis – our partnership with the British Gas Energy Trust provides grants and monetary advice services.»

Just last week, Citizens Advice reported that over three million Britons ran out of balance on prep-payment meters in the past year. This was the result of not being able to afford to top it up. They also found that at least once a month, 2 million other people were being separated for the same reason.

Shockingly, 19% of those who had their electricity cut went at least 24 hours without gas or electricity.
