For many people, high quality headphones (even if they are often quite expensive) are an absolute necessity. Whether you’re commuting around town, working in a coffee shop, or trying not to disturb your roommates, good headphones not only add to productivity but also help you keep your sanity.
Sure, you could just find some well-rated headphones at an affordable price and end the day. But the funny thing about headphones is that you won’t know what you’re missing out on until you meet a great pair.
This guide will show you how to determine if headphones are good value for money Save some extra cash spend on them and also how you can make sure you are not overpaying.
How to get the most out of your headphones
You really can’t shop for value until you understand what you want to value. The best headphones fit your application exactly, are extremely comfortable and have excellent sound quality.
Your use case
You can’t choose a headphone without first understanding what you are going to use it for. If you are using them for sports and outdoor activities, true wireless earbuds are most likely the way to go. If you want to use them on the go and want better sound quality, bluetooth over-ear headphones are a great option. If you mainly use them at your desk or while sitting and working, you will get the best sound quality and comfort with a pair of wired over-ear headphones.
The exact features that make headphones comfortable will depend on the type of headphones you choose. The comfort of earbuds really varies from person to person. One way to make the earbuds comfortable is to get some aftermarket memory foam tips to replace the silicone tips that come with almost all earbuds. For many people, this goes from being uncomfortable to being incredibly convenient.
On-ear headphones should generally be avoided for reasons of comfort.
Most Bluetooth over-ear headphones are pretty comfortable, but they can often get quite hot during long listening sessions, especially if the ear pads are made of leather (or plastic leather).
In general, the most comfortable listening experience will be wired over-ear headphones (generally because these are designed for audiophiles and audio professionals who will be using them all day).
Finding headphones with great sound quality is generally a give and take with other functions. Sound quality is generally worst with earphones, gets better with Bluetooth over-ear headphones, and is best with wired over-ear headphones. Of course, there are bluetooth headphones with better sound quality than wired headphones (but they generally cost a pretty penny).
How to choose
Most people who care about sound quality and want headphones that are great for both home use and work on the go gravitate towards a pair closed headphones (wireless if you are mainly on the go, wired if you are mainly stationary).

How to get a great price on headphones
There are a few different techniques that you can use to get a great price on your headphone purchase.
To buy second hand
Headphones are a bit of a personal product – they go on your head and even in your ears (if you’re using earphones). This option may not be for everyone – personally I would be very content with over-ear headphones, but would probably shy away from getting used earphones (gross!).
Ebay is a great option to buy used headphones and if you want to save even more money you can check your local craigstlist or Facebook marketplace.
Renewed is a great way to save some money on your headphones. Refurbished products (which can be searched for on sites like Amazon) are products that have been returned, repaired (if necessary), manually checked, and now available for resale.
These companies are not allowed to sell products that were defective as if they were new. In general, these refurbished products even come with an extra guarantee so that you can feel even more confident in your purchase decision.
Buy the right headphones
Just knowing which headphones are overpriced and which are good value for money (even if you’re paying full price) is a big win.
Many products from certain brands are grossly overpriced for their quality. Brands that are generally beating above their weight class, so to speak, include Sennheiser, Sony, and Beyer Dynamics.
