Make Elevations Credit Union’s mortgage team your go-to resource for home buying and refinancing. Matthew Hill, Mortgage Loan Officer, assists members of the Lafayette office with everything from initial home buyer applications to established home refinancing to any intervening mortgage requirements. Find out how he can help you.
Matthew Hill is human. When asked which part of the mortgage process he enjoys the most, he explains that he meets the members of Elevations and knows he can help them.
When it comes to first-time buyers, Matthew doesn’t start talking about loan terms and rates. Instead, he wants to know who he works with on a personal level and what dreams he has about home ownership.
“I like talking to people and asking them a series of questions to understand them and their goals,” he comments. “I’m going to ask them, ‘Did you even start looking? Is there a specific area or price range that you are interested in? What are your ideal budgets for down payment and monthly payments? ‘I enjoy understanding their level of comfort and then explaining which programs match what they were watching. “
Matthew works with all levels of homebuyers, from first time home buyers to second home or investment property buyers.
Four tips for mortgage buyers of all ages
Being a mortgage loan officer also means being an educator. Whether a member is first or third time buying or refinancing, it is likely that years have passed between transactions and policies have changed. Hence, new information needs to be included during the lending process.
“I think the more knowledgeable the buyer, the stronger they are and the more confident they will be in the credit process,” notes Matthew of the educational component. Here are four helpful tips mortgage buyers can use today.
- View online calculators for general guidance – It’s best to speak to a loan officer to see the real numbers and get the most accurate estimate of a monthly mortgage payment, homeowner insurance, and personal mortgage insurance (PMI) insurance.
- Find someone to click with. You communicate and share personal financial information with your mortgage loan advisor. You have to be someone you really like and trust. It also helps if you have similar communication styles and preferences!
- Get the pre-approval as soon as possible. Matthew says he often hears from buyers who have homes open but haven’t gone through pre-approval to understand how much home they can actually afford. This important document not only shows your lender and real estate agent that you are ready to buy at a certain price level, but it also speeds up the quoting process once you find your dream home.
- Work with someone who knows your market. A knowledgeable lender can provide additional insight into what’s going on in the community and can shed light on local benefits or ways to structure the best loan for you. Also, it can be comforting to visit someone in person if you have any questions.
Working as a team at Elevations
Matthew enjoys having the entire Elevations team in house and working together, from the processors to the underwriters. This makes the member loan process faster and more efficient. This approach is in line with Elevations’ commitment to putting members first and Matthew’s customer values.
“The Elevations team never gets complacent about what they’re trying to do,” he says of his community-minded employer. “They are always trying to find something better for the member or to find ways to make our process easier. They are always trying to expand, develop and help. “
Prior to joining Elevations Credit Union, Matthew worked in the health and fitness industry. He says that learning how to interact with clients, set goals and build relationships was a prerequisite for working with mortgages in his previous career. Matthew is happy to help visualize a roadmap of what it looks like to secure a mortgage from start to finish.
A growing family and outdoor adventure
When he’s not working on a refi or a new loan for an Elevations member, Matthew enjoys the Colorado countryside and spends time with his wife, daughter, two dogs, and his crazy old cat. This summer the family will be welcoming a new baby to their home.
At the top of Matthew’s list of popular outdoor activities are camping and climbing along the Front Range or at the local gym. He also looks forward to annual family reunions at Independence Pass, where he enjoys hiking and cooking around the campfire.
