Working mothers with children under the age of 18 make up a significant proportion of the workforce.

According to the latest data from the US Census Bureau, over 70% of these mothers are employed for a total of 24.7 million workers. The median annual wage for full-time mothers is $ 45,000, but mothers in some parts of the country earn far more.

Almost 72% of all mothers are employed either full-time or part-time, which is above the overall level of 63% for the general population. While the median annual wage for full-time mothers nationwide is $ 45,000, mothers in some cities and states earn significantly more or less. In addition, differences in the cost of living across the country determine how comfortable it is to live on a given annual wage.

To find the highest-paid metropolitan areas for mothers, HireAHelper’s researchers analyzed the latest wage and employment data from the US Census Bureau’s 2019 American Community Survey Regional Price Parity Data Set. To make wages comparable across locations, wages in expensive metros have been adjusted to reflect lower purchasing power, while wages in relatively affordable metros have been adjusted to reflect higher purchasing power.

The researchers ranked the subway areas based on the average annual cost of living wage for full-time mothers with children under the age of 18. In the event of a tie the underground with the larger percentage of full-time employed mothers was ranked higher. The researchers also calculated the unadjusted median annual wage for mothers and the labor force participation rate for mothers.
