Ideally, only good things will show up. It will be your LinkedIn profile, website, or portfolio that says, “I’m a professional.” If it doesn’t, what can you do?

Maybe your LinkedIn isn’t too impressive or your portfolio is years out of date. Take some time to make these small changes so that you look like a bright candidate in the eyes of Google.

On LinkedIn, make sure each section is complete, current, and clear. If you write an eye-catching headline, you’ll get a good photo and banner. The key isn’t looking like a college grad desperately looking for a job (even if you are).

Take it a step further and fill your schedules with useful, engaging content and interactions. This shows that you are serious, passionate, and trustworthy about your chosen industry.

5. Have a conversation

Whether you’re connecting through LinkedIn or going for an interview, remember to turn every interaction into a real conversation. Interviews can be nerve-wracking, but looking like a real person is important.

Show your personality, tell them a little about the person behind the resume and this can go a long way in winning them over. It’s much better than looking snug and robotic.

You can give all the right answers, but it’s not just about that. Recruiters are looking for a good company fit. You are wondering, “Can I work with this guy?”

This will also help the people you are interviewing relax a little (sometimes they are nervous, too). Often times, when everyone is more relaxed, you can get more information about the company culture and the people you work with. Remember, in an interview you can see if you want to work there too.

6. Follow up after the interview

We’ve all heard this tip without a doubt. Many are probably still skeptical about whether a cute handwritten note is really necessary for the day.

But it doesn’t have to be sloppy or dramatic. All it has to be a quick email to whoever interviewed you. Thank them, reiterate your interest and why you think you would be a good fit.

It’s polite, makes a good impression, and is a nice summary of what was hopefully a good interview. You may not get the job offer alone, but it could make a small difference. When competition between candidates is fierce, all you need is a small difference.
